Staunton Harold Hall
(written by the Editors)

The Hall, scene of the alarming episode described in Chapter VI, is about three miles south-west of Breedon-on-the-Hill Church. It is brick externally with stone dressings. Nothing is now to be seen of the original Jacobean house which was altered circa 1700 by the first Earl Ferrers, of the Shirley family. The east front, facing the Chapel, was begun in 1763 by the fifth Earl. The Saloon was decorated 1740 - 1750, and there is a splendid staircase hall with painted ceiling and portraits on the walls. The Library still has its original pedimented shelves but is now the National Trust tearoom. The Hall itself is now a Cheshire Home for the disabled.
